Alleged California ‘serial killer’ suspected of using dating apps to lure, murder victims

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has announced serious charges against Rockim Prowell, aged 34, an Inglewood resident alleged to be a serial killer. Prowell is accused of luring his victims through an online dating app, resulting in the murders of Miguel King in 2021 and Robert Gutierrez in 2023.

The charges against Prowell detail a disturbing pattern. Following a meeting with King in July 2021, he is alleged to have shot King and subsequently stolen his vehicle, which was later found near his home. King’s remains were discovered in the Angeles National Forest. The second incident involved Gutierrez, who met Prowell in August 2023, went missing shortly thereafter, and has yet to be found. Additionally, in February 2025, Prowell reportedly attacked another man, tying him up and assaulting him with a bat.

Prowell faces multiple serious charges, including two counts of murder with special circumstances due to the pattern of crimes, as well as attempted murder and carjacking. If convicted, he could receive the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole.

This case raises significant concerns regarding public safety and the potential dangers associated with online dating platforms. The incidents underscore the broader implications of violence perpetrated through digital means and might prompt a reassessment of safety measures on such platforms. Additionally, with Prowell’s prior history of burglary, there may be deeper systemic issues related to recidivism and law enforcement’s handling of suspects with extensive criminal backgrounds.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case will likely draw increased attention to the vulnerabilities individuals face when meeting people online, potentially influencing policy discussions around digital safety regulations. The community is faced with questions of how to balance technological convenience with the necessity of safety in personal interactions.
